Artificial intelligence is changing how marketers approach search, content, audience targeting, and attribution. But according to Marty McDonald, Co-Founder of Bad Rhino, the core principles behind effective marketing have not changed nearly as much as people think.
In this episode of Confessions of a Mad Marketer, Marty joins Ben LeDonni, CMO at BNP Media, for a conversation that moves beyond marketing trends and focuses on what still drives meaningful business growth in an increasingly complex digital environment.
One of the central themes is that many businesses become so focused on new platforms, new tools, and new technology that they lose sight of what already works.
Marty shares an early experience back in 2008 working with a successful dentist who wanted to modernize everything: a new website, social media, Google Ads, and email marketing. Before moving forward, Marty asked a much simpler question: “How did you build the first five offices?”
The answer had very little to do with digital marketing. That moment became foundational to how Marty approaches strategy today.
Instead of immediately replacing existing tactics, he focuses first on understanding:
- Where customers are already coming from
- What channels are already producing results
- What message resonates with buyers
- How existing success can be strengthened before expanding into new areas
That mindset carries throughout the broader discussion around:
- Why attribution is much harder to track and how it’s become less about identifying that one winning channel and more about understanding the full ecosystem.
- While technology and automation tools continue evolving rapidly, even the best systems become ineffective when the message doesn’t align with the right audience.
- How AI influences how information is being shown, but businesses still need to communicate clearly what problems they solve and why buyers should trust them.
- Marketing continues to change quickly so what works today may not work forever, creating pressure for marketers to balance proven strategies with emerging platforms.
